When should one use asynchronous vs. synchronous filesystem methods?

My default template of thinking is just to do asynchronous for everything because that was what I first learned and it's relatively straightforward, albeit there's a lot of nested stuff nested in other stuff.I am wondering if there are more rigorous procedures / ideas as to when one should use the async vs sync forms.Thanks
