working on a project. trying to add models/routes. do you only use models when working with mongoose or something similar?

having a problem calling a method from my model/controller inside of a route. did some quick googling. it seems most stack overflow answers mention mongoose/mongodb. is it possible to use model/controllers without using MongoDB/mongoose?
