Why is there such a huge difference in version between downloading npm and node from nodejs.org vs. `sudo apt-get npm`?

I'm confused. I previously downloaded node and npm from the command line, thinking it'd be the most up-to-date versions. However, for node and npm, i got versions 0.10.x and 1.3.10 respectively. Today i was checking out the nodejs.org website and node's version is 4.4.2 and npm's is 2.15.0.What's with the big discrepancy? I did run sudo apt-get update recently so that shouldn't be the issue.
