Is there any way to have different versions of global packages?

This is a question about node as much as Linux.I'm installing a pc with Ubuntu and want to have different environments for different purposes, one for machine learning, one for work and one for personal projects. The thing is that for example, for work I need a specific global version of Ionic, but would also like to have the lates for my personal projects. My two ideas where multiple users or virtual machines, but was told that with multiple users the global packages are shared. Is there any fool proof approach to this for someone little experience in both Node and Linux?
