How does passport.js authenticates the session and maintains the session?

I read about local authentication in node.js can be done using passport module and I totally understand the api's. My question is how they set the session, maintain the session to the particular user and where do they store these details in server side internally? I need mostly to learn about the internal working of passport. Can anyone explain here?
