Now that GitHub boilerplates are extremely popular, what is the best approach for keeping your project up-to-date with the boilerplate you used?

One approach I can think of is making your project a fork of the boilerplate and then update from time to time, but this seems wrong because your project is not actually a fork of the boilerplate. What is the best approach?
